'Menangle...???' I found myself asking... 'Where the frig is Menangle?' Apparently its a patch of grass just outside Sydney city limits... A fertile patch of grass it would seem as it appears to have sprouted 3 talented brothers and a mate that make up the latest batch of discoveries from Triple J Unearthed, The Rubens.
Snapped up by indie label Ivy League and touted by Mushroom as the next Temper Trap I was too intrigued not to head along to The Manning Bar on Wednesday night to see what all the fuss was about. Apparently I was not alone in my thinking. Faced with a river of uni students at the door all desperate to spend the $10 cover charge if only it weren't already sold out.
I'd heard their first single Lay it Down on the radio and it was the type of tune that captured and left you wishing it had an official film clip so all the times you spent listening to it on you tube were not in visual atrophy.
They opened well and their own take on a retro styled soulful blues rock certainly struck a chord with lthe young punters wedged in the small venue. Their mass appeal is certainly evident and I can see that these young lads from a patch of grass just outside Sydney seem to have all the makings of a band soon to be reckoned with.
About to embark on a national tour to promote their new album I'll bet my bottom dollar this isn't the last time you hear of these lads... just remember where you heard it first.
